PROJECTS IN THE AMERICAS

PANAMA / MEXICO PROJECT

"Projects undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)"

The upper Bay of Panama and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in Mexico are both globally significant Important Bird Areas (IBAs) requiring immediate conservation attention due to threats from land development and unsustainable land-use practices. Both sites provide critical habitat for a diverse array of migratory song and shore birds, including the Western Sandpiper, the Ruddy Turnstone, the Northern Parula, the Black-throated Warbler and the Northern Water Thrush.

Nature Canada in conjunction with Amigos de Sian Ka'an in Mexico, and Panama Audubon Society are working together to support two very important conservation initiatives in Latin America. With support from the Canadian International Development Agency's Environment and Sustainable Development Program, we are working to enhance conservation-based economic opportunities for the local communities adjacent to these IBAs. In Mexico local community members are being taught English and trained to be bird guides. This integrated conservation and development project seeks to initiate ecotourism-based community development projects compatible with conservation objectives.
