First Things First!

“Maintain the offshore oil and gas moratoria on BC’s Coast!”

The federal government is currently considering a proposal to study the lifting of the offshore oil and gas moratoria on the BC Coast. The Canadian Nature Federation, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, and World Wildlife Fund Canada believe it is essential that the federal and provincial governments and First Nations put in place a network of marine protected areas designed to protect representative and distinctive habitats before any assessment is done of the feasibility of oil and gas development.

The Pacific Marine Environment is home to a vast diversity of wildlife. The area of proposed oil and gas development is one of the most biologically rich and diverse marine ecosystems on the BC Coast. After ten years of negotiations, the Canadian and BC Governments have not finalized their joint marine protected areas strategy and many key long-identified marine areas still await protection. If the federal and provincial governments are serious about sustainable resource management, they must protect critical wildlife habitat on the west coast now. Instead of talking about lifting the moratoria, tell them to talk about keeping their promises to conserve the coast’s diverse wildlife and habitat.

Write or phone today and say you want to see the present offshore oil and gas moratorium maintained on the BC coast.
