The Union québécoise pour la conservation de la nature (UQCN) was founded in 1981 by a group of individuals and organizations working in the environmental and conservation fields. It became Nature Québec / UQCN in 2005. The UQCN (Quebec Conservation Union) adopted the three objectives of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) at its beginnings, in 1981: preserve biodiversity; maintain healthy ecosystems; promote sustainable development. Throughout its 20-year history since then, it has maintained a two-pronged approach in its interventions, in keeping with this decision: it has insisted on the basic objective of maintaining healthy ecosystems and their biodiversity, while maintaining consistent involvement in efforts to improve development strategies in sectors having major impacts on the land, whether these be in forestry, agriculture, energy or transportation, among others. Nature Québec / UQCN has more than 80 affiliated groups in almost all of Quebec’s regions and counts more than 6,000 members, supporters and volunteers.

Nature Quebec / UQCN is working in partnership with local IBA groups and have developed and elaborated conservation plans for 11 Quebec IBAs. Each plan provide an opportunity to educate the public about the IBA program and promote new initiatives within the IBAs. Conservation plans contain a general overview of the overall IBA Program and why it is important to bird conservation, as well as site-spécific information including species lists, ways to utilize volunteers for conservation work and the resources available.
