PLOVER PROTECTION AND PUBLIC AWARENESS IN THREE PEI

ISLAND NATURE TRUST
CANAVOY AREA, PEI NATIONAL PARK, AND MALPEQUE BAY IBAS,
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
The Canavoy Area, PEI National Park, and Malpeque Bay
IBAs support more than 50% of the nesting pairs of Piping
Plover on Prince Edward Island. The Piping Plover Protection
and Public Awareness project is the only program working
to protect this species and engage local communities
in these areas. The activities of Island Nature Trust
are closely aligned with the conservation objectives
for all three IBAs. Their conservation and education
program is critical to the success of this endangered
species on Prince Edward Island.
Given
that Canavoy beach is a popular recreational area, maintaining
a comfortable distance between beach-goers (and their
pets), and plover nests is crucial. A combination of
staff and volunteers will identify active plover nesting
areas, erect symbolic fencing and educational signs
to minimize human disturbance, and educate beachgoers
and landowners about how they can help protect the plover
and its habitat.
