IBA Stewardship Program
Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory
Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park IBA, Alberta
The Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory (LSLBO) is operated by a dedicated group of volunteers who work on behalf of bird conservation at the Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park IBA. This diverse area around Lesser Slave Lake, one of Alberta's largest lakes, hosts more than 200 species of land and waterbirds.
The LSLBO recognizes the potential risks habitat destruction could have on the local bird populations. To address this LSLBO has started the IBA Stewardship Program to raise awareness of residents and visitors about the Lesser Slave Lake Important Bird Area and how they can help local bird populations. With the help of the Canadian Nature Federation's Communities in Action program LSLBO will hire a Conservation Educator who will be responsible for continuing the IBA Stewardship Program, which began two years ago. Activities will focus on raising the profile of the program to government, industry and other property owners on the lake and will include workshops, mall display presentations, and school presentations.
